How long will I be an exJW vs a fomer JW?
by AllTimeJeff indrew sagan in a recent post (he recently graduated college) said this, something that i agree with and frankly, think about often.
to those of you who feel that you need to "help others" in the watchtower i give you this word of caution.
be careful, because that may simply be an excuse you are using to remain stuck in the past.

Possibly some of us are stuck in the past. Or maybe we're just internet addicts. Being here probably does little to help us get out in the world and live and make new friends in real life. We're mainly just operating in cyberworld. I think for some it is fun. And for others, it is probably best to step away and spend more productive time in the real world.
Jeff, if you leave, you will be greatly missed. You have some of the best posts on here. But I do understand.
Your mother gave you great advice. Be happy. Do what makes you happy.

Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses is a Negative, Depressing Thing To Do, but....
by AllTimeJeff inover the years since i left jehovahs witnesses, one of the more fascinating things to observe, and really to me, the most important, is what to do after you leave.. to be sure, no one leaves because of a positive experience.
and therein lies the issues with leaving.
basically, people leave in three general ways: 1. they, like myself, resign or leave due to a disagreement.

I think there are MANY JWs that have convinced themselves that they are happy. They are drinking the Kool-Aid big time. They wll not even ackowledge how unhappy they are or what is causing it. As they down their pills and sip from their flasks and lay in bed with their vague illnesses.
Truly happy JWs? No, I don't see it in my experience. Too much cognitive dissonance for that.
Upon leaving , there are many negative emotions. These internet sites are great places to have your emotions validated, like you say. I've never had any other place to do that except here.

Hubris is a better word than bravado. But I think maybe there is both.

Yes, I am screwed up. But not as much as my sister, mother, and several other cousins. I also have a couple of cousins that have led pretty normal lives. But their father was never a believer and they were very influenced by him. They were lucky.

I don't know but they ALWAYS have. That's my memory. That bravado is a large part of being a JW. I think it's one reason it's so hard to leave. You have to break through that bravado.

Planted a seed today... Update on de-program of my 16 year old son
by Aussie Oz inwell, some of you know that i have a 16 year old son who lives with his jw mother.
she has already mastered the art of guilt control on him.
i am most anxious that he not get baptized at all or at least unless he has really understood the whole truth, not just the watchtower truth.

BEING AN ACTIVE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS IS A NEGATIVE, DEPRESSING THING TO DO!
I agree with some of the other posters that there is more than 3 ways to leave. There are those of us that that were born-ins that left before we were baptized.
It is a very negative upbringing. And that is something that we have to deal with the rest of our lives. It is possible to change your attitude. But it takes work and effort to counteract the negativity of our childhoods and adolescence.
I think any of us that leave have to deal at some time with what it did to us. It can be depressing to look back but I think it is necessary in order to go forward in a healthy way. There was damage done to all of us. I chose to ignore that for many years. I am now going back and facing it.

I think someone should plan a big Apostafest in the same city at the same time as a District Convention. How about one in Georgia?

AussieOz: You're doing a GREAT job. I believe your son is well on the way to leaving the JWs. The 12-17 age is the prime time to influence kids away from their JW upbringing. They just naturally are questioning things and exploring sprirtual beliefs. They are also developing critical thinking skills rapidly.
Keep it up! And keep us posted!
